A combination of absolute performance, ton of features, premium design, and interactive UI, Coolpad Cool 1 packs everything to fit perfectly in the profitable mid-range smartphone market in India.

Coolpad has launched the Cool 1 in two variants- the 3GB Ram version available for offline buyers and the 4GB Ram variant available exclusively on Amazon.in for online buyers. Both the variants are priced at INR 13,999 only.

To see that it is really big on value, let’s compare it with the Xiaomi Redmi Note 3(priced at INR 11,999 for 32GB variant) which is itself considered the best value for money phone in the mid-range market.

Build and Design

Cool 1

The Cool 1 has a premium look and the build quality is also nice as it has metal chassis. It has got a 5.5” IPS Full HD display. It weighs 173gms and has a screen to body ratio of 73.3%. At the bottom, the phone has got speaker grille and a Type-C port. There are fingerprint sensor and a dual camera setup on a raised platform at the back.

Redmi Note 3

The device has a full metal body and has got curved edges. The front is flat with a 5.5” Full HD display that has got small bezels on the side. The area over top of the display, we have the earpiece, ambient light sensor, front-facing camera, and notification LED light placed. On the bottom, there is a micro-USB port and over the top side, we have the 3.5mm audio jack and an infrared blaster. Overall, the device looks good in the hand.

Software

Cool 1

The device runs EUI and has android 6.0(marshmallow) out of the box which is likely to be updated soon. The UI version is 5.8 which performs well and is snappy enough but lacks a separate app drawer.

Redmi Note 3

The Note 3 run on heavily customized MIUI 7 and has android 5.1(lollipop) out of the box. This UI has adaptive fonts which increase the readability. This UI is one of the very few devices that gets the Google’s security update regularly. It is a heavy UI so it is not as snappy as Cool 1.

Performance and Hardware

Cool 1

Hardware wise, the Cool 1 is a beast, combining Snapdragon 652 octa-core SoC clocked in at 1.4 GHz, 4 gigs of ram and Adreno 510 as the GPU. The Cool 1 can handle games like Asphalt 8 and Injustice: Gods Among Us very easily, there are no frame drops or lags. The main plus point of this device is that it doesn’t heat up even after 30 mins of heavy gaming. This phone is great for multitasking as the UI is not heavy and it has lots of ram and an octa-core SoC on top. All in all, it performs great, in-fact the best in this range which we can also verify from the benchmark scores. The speaker is loud enough but the audio quality is deteriorated at high volume. The fingerprint sensor is quick to authenticate.

Redmi Note 3

The Redmi Note 3 also performs very efficiently when it comes to performance. Specification wise it has got a perfect chipset for a phone under INR 11,999 only. It features a 64-bit hexacore Snapdragon 650 SoC. It has got 3GB dual channel Ram with 32GB internal memory and Adreno 510 which is great itself. It handles multitasking very well owing to its 6 cores. Switching between applications is also very snappy thanks to its Ram optimization and CPU adjustment built right in the UI. It handles games like Pokemon GO and Mortal Combat with absolutely no frame drops which is great indeed. The audio is not loud and the quality is also not good. The fingerprint sensor is very quick.

Camera

Cool 1

The main feature of Cool 1 is that it has got a dual rear setup of 13MP shooters out of which one is RGB and another is monochrome. Due to its Dual cameras, the depth in the image is enhanced to a great level. It also features a selfie camera of 8MP and the selfies were quite good given the price. The camera in bright lighting conditions can easily out-perform any device in this range but during low light conditions like indoors the image quality was not good and the image was grainy and lacked details.

The camera UI is easy to use and doesn’t require much of an effort. At the top, you get toggles to trigger the flash, SLR mode, HDR mode, switch cameras and add filters. At the bottom, it has buttons to switch on the night, video, photo, panorama, and pro modes.

Note 3

The Redmi Note 3 got a 16-megapixel camera on the back that comes with 0.1-second ultra-fast PDAF. Image quality during the day on the bright sun or during good lighting conditions are decent, but the camera does not perform well during low light conditions. The images lack details, sharpness, and the color temperature is also not accurate. The HDR mode is also not very good and the auto focus takes a lot of time to focus during low light. As far as the front camera is concerned the device packs a 5 MP camera with f/2.0 aperture and a lot of beauty profiles.

Should you buy?

The Coolpad Cool 1 features everything you can get in a mid-range smartphone from premium design, a dual camera setup, good battery life, reverse charging and beast-like performance.

The only department where the phone lagged behind is low-light photography and audio quality and no fast charging.

When it comes to variants we would highly recommend the 4GB Ram variant which is available exclusively on Amazon.

The Coolpad Cool 1 is really a beast for the entry-level smartphone market as it beats the Xiaomi Redmi Note 3 which itself was the king of Budget phones
